Other Natural Attractions

There are many other natural attractions sprinkled around Bosnia & Herzegovina besides the ones with dedicated pages. We recommend the following:

Vrelo Bosne (English: Bosna river springs) is a public park, featuring a spring of the River Bosna, at the foothills of the Mount Igman on the outskirts of Sarajevo. Vrelo Bosne is one of the country’s popular natural landmarks and provides a quiet escape from an otherwise busy city life.

A Roman Bridge is located not far from Vrelo Bosne on the Bosna river, which was built sometime between 1530 and 1550 from the original Roman stones and ruins of the bridge that stood there during the Roman period. Ilidža is also known to have been an archaeological site dating 2400–2000BC. The park is usually entered via the 3 kilometer long tree alley.

Livno Wild Horses – On the plains and foothills of Činčar Mountain, which towers above the town of Livno in western Bosnia, wild horses roam free.

It is said that there are over three hundred of these horses roaming the area, having first appeared in this location almost half a century ago after being abandoned by owners who were increasingly using mechanized means to agriculturally exploit the valleys below.

Krušnica River Springs – Located some 6km from the town of Bosanska Krupa, this river spring is an impressive sight of the power of nature. The river is clean and actually drinkable at the source. There is a hydroelectric power plant close to the springs built at the town of Austro-Hungarian rule and it is still functional, a real relic. The entire length of the river is very popular for fly-fishing. The attraction can be reached by car or a tourist boat from Bosanska Krupa.

Tajan Nature Park – This nature park, designated as a protected area in 2010, features a 1,297m high mountain, curving green rivers and creeks, coniferous forests, flourishing bio-diversity and cave-rich limestone geology provide nature lovers with a wide range of activities: runners, hikers, cavers, fishermen, and mountain bikers.

Bijambare Nature Preserve –The Bijambare area, famous for its caves, is located on the far north-eastern slopes of Ilijaš, a small town near Sarajevo. It is accessible by the main road Sarajevo-Olovo, from which an asphalt road branches out leading towards a mountain home and the especially known Bijambare cave. Large parts of these caves are open to visitors.

Optimum height above sea level (950 m on average), thick conifer woods, meadows, two water flows with lakes and chasms, five caves, rocky massif and high quality air provide ideal conditions for alpinism, speleology, skiing, mushroom picking, medicinal herb picking, or simply for nature excursions and visits.

Pliva River Springs – Pliva is relatively small river in central parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, however one of the most significant in terms of natural, cultural and historical heritage and value as a natural rarity. Its source is some 8 kilometers upstream of the town of Šipovo near Pljeva at the foot of the mountain of Smiljevac-Jastrebnjak, where the Pliva springs out from two very strong karstic springwells at 483 meters above seal level.

Pliva river is famous for its clean water, particularly near the source in the mountains and its richness in fish which makes the river so attractive for flyfishing, not just in Bosnia and Herzegovina but also in the region.

Janj River Islands – Janj plateau is an area in the Republic of Srpska famous for numeorus natural features: Janj primeval forest, Janj river springs, Vaganske caves and its most popular feature – Janja River Islands. The river Janj from its source carves a small canyon in places some 200m deep. Some 4 km down the stream the river encounters natural obstacles that force it to part into smaller streams that meander, creating natural river islands known as Janj river islands, with numerous cascades and waterfalls, eventually merging together again to form a cold mountain stream again. Numerous old mills make this natural attraction even more appealing.

The attraction can be reached by car from the town of Šipovo.
