Skiing & Snowboarding

In our post Winter Tourism we wrote about general information about winter tourism and activities in Bosnia & Herzegovina. Here we will talk more about skiing and snowboarding opportunities in the country. The general skiing season starts in early December and lasts until end of March, or longer if snow and low temperatures permit.

According to www.skiresort.info (SkiResort), one of the largest skiing information portals in the world, there are 20 ski locations in Bosnia & Herzegovina. In fact, we know that there are more than 20 locations but they are not all listed on this web site. We will list and rank the most significant ones in this post. Here is the full list of significant ski resorts in Bosnia & Herzegovina, ranked by the quality of experience they offer and some essential data:

  1. Jahorina
    • Located some 35 km southeast of Sarajevo in the Republic of Srpska
    • Average altitude of 1,560 m (between the elevations of 1,300 and 1,916 m)
    • Great for skiing and snowboarding, but also family fun such as sledding
    • Opening times 09:00-16:00 (except floodlit areas for night skiing)
    • For skiing and snowboarding, there are 47 km of slopes available (20 km easy slopes, 15 km intermediate slopes, 12 km difficult slopes)
    • 15 lifts transport the guests (2 x 10-person gondolas, 5 chairlifts, 5 T-bar lifts, 3 people movers/moving carpets), 11.1 km total in length, capacity 26,600 passengers/hour
    • The usually high levels of natural snowfall are complemented by artificial snow production equipment (165 snow cannons covering all slopes)
    • Floodlighting enables night skiing (2.4 km length)
    • Hotels, holiday apartments, bars and clubs are all found at the ski resort
    • The winter sports resort was the site of the Women’s Alpine competitions for the 1984 Olympic Games of Sarajevo
  2. Bjelašnica (Babin Do)
    • Located some 27 km south of Sarajevo in Sarajevo Canton
    • The winter sports area is situated between the elevations of 1,270 and 2,067 m (highest ski-slopes in the country)
    • Great for skiing and snowboarding, but also family fun such as sledding
    • Opening times 08:00-16:00 (except floodlit areas for night skiing)
    • There are 12.5 km of slopes available for skiing and snowboarding (4.5 km easy slopes, 7 km intermediate slopes, 1 km difficult slopes)
    • 8 lifts transport the guests (4 chairlifts, 4 T-bar lifts), total length 7.9 km, capacity 8,845 passengers/hour
    • Artificial snow production equipment available covering all slopes
    • Hotels, holiday apartments, bars and clubs are all found at the ski resort
    • Floodlighting enables night skiing (0.9 km length)
    • The winter sports resort was the site of the Men’s Alpine competitions for the 1984 Olympic Games of Sarajevo
  3. Vlašić
    • Located some 112 km northwest of Sarajevo in Central Bosnia Canton
    • The winter sports area is situated between the elevations of 1,220 and 1,520 m
    • Great for skiing and snowboarding, but also family fun such as sledding
    • Opening times 09:00-16:00 (except floodlit areas for night skiing)
    • There are 9.5 km of slopes available for skiing and snowboarding (6 km easy slopes, 3 km intermediate slopes, 0.5 km difficult slopes)
    • 6 lifts transport the guests (6 T-bar lifts), total length 3.8 km, capacity 5,150 passengers/hour
    • Artificial snow production equipment available on some slopes
    • Floodlighting enables night skiing (1.07 km length)
  4. Kupres (Ski Adria and Ski Kraljica)
    • Located some 147 km west of Sarajevo in Canton 10
    • The winter sports area is situated between the elevations of 1,189 and 1,528 m (Ski Adria) and 1,300 and 1,758 m (Ski Kraljica)
    • Great for skiing and snowboarding, but also family fun such as sledding
    • Opening times 09:00-16:00
    • There are 13 km of slopes available for skiing and snowboarding (5.9 km easy slopes, 7.1 km intermediate slopes, 0 km difficult slopes) at Ski Adria Area
    • There are 4.5 km of slopes available for skiing and snowboarding (1.5 km easy slopes, 3 km intermediate slopes, 0 km difficult slopes) at Ski Kraljica Area
    • 5 lifts transport the guests (2 chairlifts, 2 T-bar lifts, 1 rope tow/baby lift), total length 5.1 km, capacity 5,500 passengers/hour at Ski Adria Area
    • 2 lifts transport the guests (1 chairlift, 1 rope tow/baby lift), total length 1.6 km, capacity 1,700 passengers/hour at Ski Kraljica Area

  5. Ravna Plannina
    • Located some 27 km southeast of Sarajevo in the Republic of Srpska
    • The winter sports area is situated between the elevations of 920 and 1,281 m
    • Great for skiing and snowboarding, but also family fun such as sledding
    • There are 12.5 km of slopes available for skiing and snowboarding (10.7 km easy slopes, 1.4 km intermediate slopes, 0.4 km difficult slopes)
    • 3 lifts transport the guests (1 gondola lift, 1 T-bar lift, 1 rope tow/baby lift), total length 2.5 km, capacity 3,600 passengers/hour
    • Artificial snow production equipment available on some slopes
    • Floodlighting enables night skiing (1.4 km length)
  6. Raduša
    • Located some 135 km west of Sarajevo in Central Bosnia Canton
    • The winter sports area is situated between the elevations of 1,290 and 1,757 m
    • Great for skiing and snowboarding, but also family fun such as sledding
    • There are 6.6 km of slopes available for skiing and snowboarding (1 km easy slopes, 5 km intermediate slopes, 0.6 km difficult slopes)
    • 4 lifts transport the guests (1 chairlift, 3 T-bar lifts), total length 3.2 km, capacity 4,200 passengers/hour
  7. Igrišta – Vlasenica
    • Located some 83 km northeast of Sarajevo in the Republic of Srpska
    • The winter sports area is situated between the elevations of 1,040 and 1,350 m
    • Great for skiing and snowboarding, but also family fun such as sledding
    • There are 5 km of slopes available for skiing and snowboarding (3 km easy slopes, 2 km intermediate slopes, 0 km difficult slopes)
    • 3 lifts transport the guests (1 T-bar lift, 2 rope tow/baby lifts), total length 1.4 km, capacity 2,000 passengers/hour
  8. Blidinje – Risovac
    • Located some 110 km west of Sarajevo in Herzegovina-Neretva Canton
    • The winter sports area is situated between the elevations of 1,290 and 1,551 m

    • Located some 110 km northwest of Sarajevo in Central Bosnia Canton

    • Located some 70 km west of Sarajevo in Central Bosnia Canton

    • There are 3.4 km of slopes available for skiing and snowboarding (1.4 km easy slopes, 2 km intermediate slopes, 0 km difficult slopes)

  11. Malo Polje – Igman
    • Located some 29 km southwest of Sarajevo in Sarajevo Canton
    • The winter sports area is situated between the elevations of 1,160 and 1,492 m
