Sarajevo Canton
The Sarajevo Canton, officially the Canton of Sarajevo is one of 10 cantons of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its cantonal capital is Sarajevo, also the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Canton represents the metro area of the country’s capital city together with the City of East Sarajevo, Republic of Serpska. It contains 97% of the city’s population of the metropolitan area.
The Sarajevo Canton features typical Bosnian geography with numerous mountains, including Bjelašnica, Igman, Jahorina, Trebević, and Treskavica, hills and valleys. The cities of the Canton are built predominantly on the hills at the foot of these hills and mountains and the fields separating them. The most significant of these is the Sarajevo field, a fairly large flat area in which the city is formed. The Miljacka river passes through the Canton. Vrelo Bosne, the source of the Bosna River, is found in Sarajevo Canton and is the source of water for most residents of Sarajevo.
There is an abundance of spots for nature outings, picnics, day trips and excursions around the city. A recent study by the Philipp Gärtner Institute from Müncheberg has found that Sarajevo is the greenest capital in Europe: https://philippgaertner.github.io/2017/10/european-capital-greenness-evaluation/.
There are many natural features and man-made attractions that make this Canton a great place to visit. More about the Canton and the city of Sarajevo you can read on the official web site of the Sarajevo Canton Tourism Association – Visit Sarajevo: http://visitsarajevo.ba/?lang=en.
