There are numerous stunning canyons in Bosnia & Herzegovina, shaped by the many rivers of the country. The canyons are some of the most beautiful in Europe. The Tara River Canyon/Gorge is Europe’s deepest canyon. The canyons offer breathtaking views and a plethora of activities, from whitewater river rafting to hiking, mountain biking, bicycling, rock climbing and many others. The canyons are lined with endemic types of flora and fauna – bears, wolves, wild boar, marten, chamois, and all are a common sight. The most scenic canyons that will take your breath away are:
- Tara River Canyon – also known as the Tara River Gorge, is 82km long and the last 36 kilometers constitute the border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. The canyon at its deepest is around 1,300 meters deep
- Neretva River Canyon – the Upper Neretva waters run in undisturbed rapids and waterfalls, carving steep gorges reaching 600–800 meters in depth. The water is of Class I purity and is almost certainly the coldest river water in the world at 7-8 degrees Celsius in summer
- Rakitnica River canyon – the river forms a 26 km long canyon that drops 800 m
- Drina River Canyon – the Drina passes through the straits between the Zvijezda and Tara mountains, and this forms the deepest part of the canyon at over 1,000m
- Vrbas River Canyon – the Vrbas River descends through a series of gorges and reservoir lakes that together form one of country’s foremost adventure-sport playgrounds.
