The Mersad Berber Museum to Open in Sarajevo

The representatives of local authorities recently signed the framework agreement on the start of the construction of the “Mersad Berber Museum” in Sarajevo’s Old Town municipality with funds in the amount of € 742,702. The museum will be a new tourist attraction in Sarajevo and contribute to the cultural landscape of the city.

Who Was Mersad Berber?

Mersad Berber (1940–2012) was a renowned Bosnian painter and graphic artist. He is widely considered one of the most significant artists from Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 20th century. Mersad Berber passed away on October 7, 2012. His artistic contributions continue to inspire and influence artists and admirers of fine art globally.

The Legacy

The Berber family, known for its significant contributions to Bosnian art and culture, had plans to establish the Berber Museum in Sarajevo. The family aims to showcase their private collection of art and artifacts spanning several centuries. The collection includes works by Mersad Berber, who gained international recognition for his paintings and illustrations.

The artistic legacy of Mersad Berber will finally find its permanent home in the heart of Sarajevo with this museum. His works have already taken a place of honor in many museums, galleries and private collections around the world. Berber left an indelible mark with his most significant cycles such as “Sarajevo Chronicles”, “Journey to Skender Vakuf”, “Ottoman Chronicles”, “Hommage a Velazquez”, “Hommage to Vlaho Bukovac” and the last, emotional presentation “Srebrenica and Archives”.

Ensar Berber, the son of the great painter Mersad, stated that his father lived and painted for Bosnia wherever he was.

The Berber Museum is expected to be housed in a historic building in Sarajevo’s Old Town municipality at Zelenih Beretki street, building number 14.
